Expanding on final paper

•April 8, 2008 • Leave a Comment

In order for me to achieve my goal of a full ten page paper I am going to need to expand on some things and add/correct certain other things. My first goal of expanding my paper is that I am going to try to incorporate more from my actual essays into this paper. I want to show who I am, and why I am who i am through previous writings that I have already written with other parts of my paper correlating the past essay segments and my new paper.

I don’t think that I need any more outside sources because I have all of my own writings which should be enough in itself. I am going to incorporate each essay by using that sense and a segment from that sense essay that I wrote to help explain who I am because of that essay. Another thing that I know I need to work on is going to be my grammar and sentence structure. Sometimes I seem to make sentences run on forever.

Final Paper Free Writing

Looking back over my previous writings before i begin my final epic paper,  I noticed that a strong theme throughout them is my connection with my family and friends and the interactions I have with them. I think this says a good amount about the things that matter the most to me in my life and should definetly be talked about in my final paper. I also noticed throughout my writings that I tend to stray off of my original path of the paper, this may be good or it may be bad. However good or bad though, I feel that this also says something about me as perhaps somewhat of a wanderer, a thinker in the realm of the unknown.

Publishing possibilities

Three different possible publications for our papers could be:

1.)  http://www.lulu.com/en/products/paperback/

- This publication is a web site that lets you make your own books/pamphlets, etc. I chose this site because it lets you make whatever you want and seems very simple with just uploading all of your information to their site.

2.) http://www.theatlantic.com/a/contest.mhtml

- I chose this publication site because it seems fairly college student oriented, more so than other sites I may have came across. I chose this one also because Marlen mentioned it.

3.) http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/schauvin/Publishing%20Opportunities.htm

I chose this site because there is just so many opportunities for students to publish differnet selections and styles of their writings.

Hearing

“What we call “Sound” is really an onrushing, cresting, and with-drawling wave of air molecules that begins with the movement of any object, however large or small, and ripples out in all directions.”(Hacker 177) Sound is something that can mean many different things to many different people and cause cause many emotions or juts help in everyday life. Really, sound is as stated above, just a onrushing of molecules and the movement of them.

“Most verbal communication occurs in contexts where the listener can see the speaker as well as hear him.”(Nature 1) Hearing is one of the most important senses because you can hear the world around you and you can also interact with other people and hold conversations / relationships with them.

Another reason that I believe that music is so important is because you can listen to music. “Music can be a mallet banging on your eardrums, or it can be a tool to fine-tune them.”( Hearing 1) Music is something that can sooth you when you are angry or upset, or music can also be made to make you get angry or motivated to play a sport. Music is something that definitely involves the sense of hearing and music can have many good purposes that come along with it.

 MLA Examples:

In my paper about the sense of smell I used the in-text citation like this, “The smell of cut grass is caused by gases emitted from each injured blade. Chopped grass releases a long list of volatile organic compounds, including methane, acetone, ethanol and acetaldehyde, a chemical similar to the toxic preservative formaldehyde. Plants produce the volatile compounds within seconds of being cut.”(Journal Sentinel 1)

In a different paper i wrote about touch, I used my citation in the text as follows, “Touch is our oldest,  most primitive and pervasive sense. It’s the first sense we experience in the womb and the last one we lose before death.”(The Sense of Touch 1)

“Why Does Grass Smell Only When Being Cut?”Answer. June 2007. Journal Sentinel. 10 Feb. 2008. <http://answers.yahoo.com/questions/index?qid=20070530164353AA10r3D>.

APA Examples:

I will use the same example from the in text citation of the grass essay I wrote, but this time i will cite it as it should be cited in APA style. “According to the Sentinel Journal(2007), “The smell of cut grass is caused by gases emitted from each injured blade. Chopped grass releases a long list of volatile organic compounds, including methane, acetone, ethanol and acetaldehyde, a chemical similar to the toxic preservative formaldehyde. Plants produce the volatile compounds within seconds of being cut” (p. 1).

In another paper that I wrote about the sense of touch, I used an in text quotation in MLA format. I will convert it to APA style for this blog entry like this,  Bright Eyes(2008) lyrics state “…And there is nothing more I want than just one night, That’s free of doubt and sadness, One night that I can really feel” (p.1).

Power of Touch

•February 28, 2008 • 2 Comments

Touch is the most important sense to me, not only because I can feel the world surrounding me, but also because I believe that touch can be emotional as much as physical. “Touch is our oldest,  most primitive and pervasive sense. It’s the first sense we experience in the womb and the last one we lose before death.”(The Sense of Touch) This quote tells me just how important the sense of touch must be since it is the first sense that we have and the last one as well.

The physical aspect of touch is so important to me because it helps me process my surroundings in more than just seeing, hearing or smelling. Touch is probably my most important sense because so many things feel so different and unique in their own sense. Some things may be soft and smooth, while other things may be hard and rough. Touch to me is also a way of knowing things that I should touch or not, for example, growing up I never touched anything really hot because when I was younger I touched something that was very hot and it burned my hand which hurt me, so I learned to never do that again.

Touch to me is also more than just physical, I believe that touch can be interpreted as emotional just as much as physical.”…And there is nothing more I want than just one night, That’s free of doubt and sadness, One night that I can really feel.”(SongMeanings.net) The quote from a song that i just used is important because the artist wants one night that he can really FEEL, but he isn’t talking about feel as in touch, I believe he is talking about feelings inside of him. This is just more proof to me and helps me in understanding that touch can be more than just a physical sense. We have all been “touched” in one way or another by a person, song, movie, etc. That one moment that puts goosebumps all over your body and raises the hairs on you, that is my favorite aspect of touch.

Smell Test #2

•February 8, 2008 • Leave a Comment

The second smell that I got the chance to divulge myself into was a smell more manly than the last. This smell seems to remind me of family gatherings when all of the guys in the family seem to group up in the living room or some other location and just sit and talk while drinking some beers. This memory can best be described by tinking about thanksgiving day, after everyone has ate and is tired and full, the women usually are all out in the big kitchen in our house talking and the men relocate to the living room and watch t.v, sleep or just talk about random things. This memory that was caused by the smell is enjoyable to me because I dont get to see my family much anymore and it feels good remembering these times we were all together.

Smell Test #1

The smell that just plunged into my nose reminded me of an open window on a beautiful summer day at my house in Montoursville. The reason that this smell reminds me of this perticular occassion is because growing up we would always have the windows open on beautiful days instead of the air conditioning; it’s one of those days when you wake up and can hear the birds singing outside of your window, and for once I am not mad by being woken up because the sweet summer smell is plunging into my house and filling it with wonderful scents of flowers, fresch cut grass, trees and all the other wonderful scents that summer brings.

Smell

Smell is very important to me. Smell helps me distinguish what i am going to eat or not eat, it helps me find which clothes are clean or dirty and can even help me in distinguishing which girls perfume I like or dislike. Smell works in mysterious ways, sometimes I can just smell things that I know i have smelled before and instantly be taken back to that time in my life or a certain place that I once was.

When I wake up some mornings in a haze from the night before, I am scrambling around trying to find clothes to put on so I can make it to class on time, I just pick them up and put them up to my nose and take a big wiff into my nostrils and depending on which scent enters my nose and gets relayed to my brain will tell me if I will wear those clothes to class that day or not. That is one way in which my nose and sense of smell are important to me, another reason smell is important to me is by picking out food items. You can usually sense food items that are sweet, sour, spicy etc. by smelling them, and depending on which smell I receive will help me choose which items I feel the need to eat on this particular occasion.

My favorite reason that the sense of smell is important is because I get to smell the lovely smell of beautiful women’s perfume. No person can sit and read this and not relate with what I am about to say. Say a beautiful guy/ girl is walking past you and as the wind blows, it blows through their hair or across their clothes or whatever part of body they may be wearing that certain scent that just smells wonderful. Something about some smells just really is wonderful, and I wish I could have that smell trapped in my nose for months.

Essay 2- In A Salad World

•February 3, 2008 • 2 Comments

When I think of salad, I think of very fresh blend of various green leafs, an assortment of various vegetables perhaps and whatever else you may want to add into the salad. Usually a typical American salad that most people in the United States are use to are made of a combination of green Romanian lettuce and cut-up vegetables. The Lettuce, if fresh, is usually very green and tastes crunchy if it is the crunchy kind. If it is not the crunchy kind, it will not be hard and crunchy it will be smooth, and when you bite into it, it has a savory leathery feel to it.

The other ingredients that you could add to a salad which are usually in most salads people eat are vegetables. The vegetables most commonly used are carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes and possibly zucchini. Carrots are an orange color, and when in salads usually they are in little think strips or just cut up in chunks about half an inch wide. The carrots are usually freshly washed, if made well, which means they will be somewhat wet still. They are also usually very crunchy if they are fresh carrots, so fresh that when you bite into them you hear a cracking noise, but carrots are very healthy for you and are tasty if you enjoy them. Cucumbers are more of a green vegetable, with a darker and harder green outer skin. The skin is tough, but not so tough that you can’t eat it and not enjoy it. Inside the skin the rest of the vegetable is hard but not as hard as the skin and is a lighter green color than the skin. There are also seeds inside the middle of the cucumber that are also edible. Cucumbers are not my favorite vegetable, the flavor is very bland, but some people do enjoy them. Tomatoes are very red in color and also have somewhat of a skin on them, but their skin is very thin and not tough at all. Once the skin of a tomato has been protruded, the inside is very juicy with seeds that are also edible. People usually cut tomatoes up in chunks for their salad, or just usually use a smaller type of tomato that looks like a miniaturized tomato. Tomatoes also aren’t very appealing to me because they have a somewhat sweet taste, but aren’t appealing to me and are also somewhat bland. The last type of vegetable that usually is in salads that the common person that I know eats would be a zucchini. Zucchini has a hard outer skin like most of the other vegetables I mentioned that go into salads, and the inside of zucchinis are somewhat hard as well, but softer then the shell. They also like the other vegetables, have seeds inside that are edible. Zucchinis have a bland taste to me as well; sometimes some zucchinis have a sour aftermath once I swallow it.

Once the basic elements of the salad have been prepared and mixed together, one may put some sort of sauce/dressing topping on it to add flavoring or just as another ingredient. Typically the dressing is usually creamy and thick; dressings are meant to add another dimension to the flavor. The dressings usually have so many different flavors in every bite; some flavors are very sweet, while others are very sour and bitter. Once again, it is all in the personal preference of the person which is going to eat the salad.

Salads have been around for many thousands of years, maybe not the same type that we think of today with all the various ingredients that we put into them, but the basic element of the lettuce has been around for centuries. Salads have developed with different cultures just like everything else has done in society, that’s why there are so many different ingredients which can be added which have so many different flavors and aspects to the salad. One thing I am sure about though is that a salad is a very tasty combination of foods that once brought together are almost like a utopian state-of-mind for the mouth. It would take me too long to sit and type out every food item that goes into a salad and then describe them, simply because in a salad one can add whatever they would like to eat with it. In a salad world, there are no limitations for the taste-buds.
